10 seconds of exposure (June 2005) ...

That one took several times to achieve. I mean, I went to that place a dozen of times before I could even get such a luck. Many things here contribute to such a powerful image. The long exposure is a decisive factor to get the water texture like this, I wanted that from the begining. A very cooperative and very still bird (in this case a Black Crowned Night Heron, known for their ability to stay still forever when they rest or when they fish), the perfect lighting (and trust me, I was never able to repeat this light at this place ever after), a couple of filters on the lens (in this case a Blue/Gold polarizer and a circ polarizer together + a ND 08 filter) as they helped keeping the exposure longer and the colors as you see them. A flash was also much needed to fire a last blast of light on the BCNH (sychronized in Rear Curtain). The D2X was set up in HSC (high speed crop) so I got the FOV of 400mm with my AF-S VR 70-200 2.8. I had my Budy Benoit G (member on PBase as well) to stop people to come on the bridge where I was shooting for a few minutes so I can get a perfectly still environment. As you can see, this was thought of long in advance. I am quite proud of this one too.

Very impressive scenario, you must a perfectionist, bravo. Our Provence grey herons are hardly as beautiful as the one you show, so beautifully here, Peter

Unbelievable! Definately a shot to be proud of! I've shot Yellow Crowned Night Herons, but I don't think I've ever seen one stay still for 10s. Again, unbelievable!

WOW. Great effect with the slow exposure, but how did you know the bird would remain still for so long? Not even a leaf has moved.

How did you convince it to stay such still? :)

Outstanding shot and gallery. I come back now and then to see your newer and always impressive stuff, Yves.

Regards!
