Juan Santamaria was a 19 year old patriot and national hero. He set fire to a wooden fort
and helped get William Walker (an American, that in 1857 invaded Guanacaste with his army)
to flee Costa Rica. He was killed in the process. The national airport is named after him and
his hometown of Alajuela proudly features this statue.
