Zurich


Though the political capital of Switzerland is Bern, Zurich, the largest city in the country is
the biggest cultural and commercial center. It is often regarded as a true global city. The city
has developed around Lake Zurich which is filled the River Limmat and the River Sihl. Lake Zurich
is also one of the largest lakes in the country. The city is also surrounded by hills with wooded
forests, whose peaks offer magnificent views of the city below.

The international airport is at Kloten, a few train spots away from Zurich's main train station.
The city has a wide range of transportation services, trams, cabs, trains, buses and boats. Most
people speak English, though the primary language is German. Tourists should not have a problem
in this city.

The Bahnofstrasse is the main shopping street, though expensive. Walk from Zurich HB, the main
station down the river, and to the lake. See the Grossmünster Church and the Fraumünster church,
walk through the old town and then find your way back to the Bahnofplatz through the Bahnofstrasse.
Keep your eyes open for all the different sculptures and statues along the way. they add color and
character to the city.

Zurich is also famous for its street parades. The biggest is called Street parade and is one of
the largest technology parties around the world. The next one is in August 2006. We were there in
time to witness the Christopher Street Day celebrations.

In all, Zurich, though not as quaint as the towns of Switzerland, is defnitely the center of the
action and a true big city.
