Salisbury, England

Salisbury is a Cathedral city. It is only 8 miles from Stonehenge so it attracts a lot of tourists. In it's own right, it is home to one of the most beautiful cathedrals in UK and is also now fast becoming a hip party town filled with pubs and a very active night life. It is about an hour and a half from London.

The first cathedral was built at Old Sarum by St Bishop Osmund between 1075 and 1092. A larger building was built on the same site in c.1120. However, deteriorating relations between the clergy and the military at Old Sarum led to the decision to move the cathedral elsewhere. Thus the city of New Sarum, known as Salisbury, was founded in 1220, and the building of the new cathedral begun by Bishop Richard Poore in that year. The main body was completed in only 38 years and is a masterpiece of Early English architecture. The 123 metre (404 feet) spire was built later and is the tallest spire in the UK.

This Cathedral is also important because one of the four copies of the original Magna Carta of 1215, all of which are in UK, is here within these walls and this is the best preserved one. The clock within the Cathedral dating back from the 14th century is also supposed to be the oldest working clock in the world.

Salisbury is a great base for visiting the Stonehenge and has a lot to offer to tourists.
