Vrindavan, around 15 km from Mathura, is a major place of pilgrimage for Hindus, and especially Krishna devotees. In Hindu myth, this is the area where Krishna in all innocence and naughtiness, frolicked with the gopikas and flirted with Radha. These stories have been told many times, and are now immortalized in devotional songs, and classical indian dance compositions. The town is 135 km from Delhi, and given the extremely smooth National Highway 2, it can be reached within 2 hours. The town is believed to have over 5000 temples and it takes its toll on the town. The streets are small and crowded, the temple complex are dirty and filled with beggars and touts. Don't expect to see a blue lake filled land with colorful maidens singing and dancing, as depicted in the Bollywood movies. There isn't much of a village calmness to enjoy either. The temple worth seeing is the Banke Bihari Temple, if only for the number of devotees and their love for Thakurji (Another name for Lord Krishna). Vrindavan is also close to Mathura, the birthplace of Krishna. Another temple that is close to Vrindavan is the Gokul mandir, though geting there has to be by chance rather than will. Once away from the temple areas, the area around this Krishna land is quite pretty. On your drive you will notice miles and miles of mustard fields. given the yellow flowers, this provides a most beautiful sight. Stop in Mathura or Vrindavan, only if you have the time or the devotion, else drive straight to Agra. More info here...
