This world famous monument to the Polish astronomer, commissioned by Stainslaw Staszic was erected in 1830. Proving that the Earth orbit the Sun, Mikolaj Kpoernik expounded one of the most important scientific theories in the history of mankind.
During the German occupation, this monumnet was sabotaged. The Germans covered the Polish inscription with their own German text. The statue was almost destroyed but miraculously survived. The statue was the work of Bartel Thorvaldsen.
