I owned one of these during my college years. It was all black with red & white naugahyde upholstry, 8" shackles and skirts. If I ran over a toothpick on the road I hit bottom! Also a pair of rusted out smittie mufflers, and a Columbia (overdrive) rear end - I was VERY popular with the girls (maybe it wasn't me after all - it was the darn car!!!) - then I graduated and got married. I sometimes think I should have kept the car and stayed single! It still ranks as one of the best cars I have ever owned.

1940 Mercury Convertible Coupe. The first Mercury was introduced in 1939, and Ford Motor Company's entry in the medium price field bore a very strong family resemblence to the Fords of that era. This convertible coupe sold for $ 1,079 brand new. It had a 116 inch wheelbase and was powered by a 239.4 flathead V-8 rated at 95 horsepower. 81,128 1940 Mercurys were produced.
