Anyone know if the Chevy 230/235 6 cylinder offered anytime during the 62 Nova model year? Specs do not seem to validate this, but things do happen with production cars during model year change over. Thanks...

Seems to me after doing more research, and spending to much time to mention trying to find all the data i can on these cars...since i recently acquired a 62 Nova Convertible... Rick Johnson is somewhat accurate in his descriptions... the first V8 offered was in fact in 62 in the Nova's, although not very common at the time, a Buick dealership started installing them, GM took notice at the overall sales numbers and started offering them as well(that all took place in 62)<62 end year production Chevy 2 convertible 283 V8.
BTW, I also acquired an extreme amount of 62 to 65 nova parts, to many to list, if your in need of something, email me at Nc2kno@gmail.com

I just got a 63 Chevy II SS. It is missing the console but has the original powerglide with the floor shifter. You can see the the front and rear brackets on the center hump of the floor. Where can I find one of these? The glove box door is missing, seems easy to find but wondered what emblem would be on it.

Please note: Do not place for sale ads here. This is specifically a car photography site. I encourge talk about the cars themselves but you are far better off going to a site like The HAMB to ask for parts, etc. Bookmark this site and ask away. There are 30-40,000 gearheads there ready to help you.

May I suggest you look for your parts on a giant gearhead site known as the HAMB or Hokey Ass Message Board. With 30 to 40,000 gearheads I am sure someone will know where you can get parts.

Here is the link to the board. You will need to register but it is free to use.

I am still looking for some bucket seats for my 63SS. I found a good set of seats for a 67, there black and in good condition. I also found a set for I think for a 68, which has the button in the back of the seat. I also need the side molding for the car. I also located a 327 motor which has a steel crank and brand new 30 over pistons in it. The engine was rebuilt years ago but it looks like someone didn,t get there clearances right. Does any one know if the corvair seats will work? I have two extra 63 hoods, one trunk lid and thw front fenders if any one is interested. I am located in Gate City Virginia!

Just bought a 62 convertible with the enterior and all trim "in a box". The motor wasn't running and tonights discovery was it sounds like I should have left it that way and built a v-8. (lots of bottom end rumbling)
So, anyone know where a guy could find a good start on the list of stuff needed to put a 350 with a 700R into the car? I will most likely have a bunch of extra trim to sell/trade as I inventory my "parts box" Thanks!

Rick Johnson 25-Jun-2005 07:01
1963 Chevy II Nova 400 Sport Coupe.
Recession year 1958 had been quite an eye opener for the Big Three Automakers. Sales, especially those of larger, more luxurious medium- priced cars with high compression, high horsepower, gas-guzzling overhead valve V-8's, were down significantly...... by more than 40%. In 1958, only American Motors, with its smaller and sensible Ramblers, including the new compact Rambler American, actually experienced significant production and sales increases. The other remaining Independent, Studebaker, introduced the compact Lark in 1959. It was such a sales success that Studebaker actually made a profit for the first time in many years, and at least for a while, breathed life into a company on the brink of death.
By the 1960 model year, the Big Three were in position to respond with brand new compact models of their own. Ford introduced the Falcon, General Motors the Chevrolet Corvair, and Chrysler debuted the Valiant. The Falcon was considered the most conventional of the three, sort of a new generation Model T, mechanically simple, and traditional in design . The Chevrolet Corvair was less traditional, more European in style, and much more mechanically complex with its air-cooled, rear-mounted engine. The Valiant was slightly larger, soundly engineered, but styling was somewhat awkward, even bizarre. Though public acceptance was considered good for all three, the Falcon was easily the most successful, outselling the other two by a wide margin, and making Ford the big winner in this new and growing market segment.
But General Motors and Chevrolet had been the Industry leaders for some time now, and they soon saw that the more sophisticated and complex Corvair, though very popular with european sports car enthusiasts, in the long run would not have the potential in numbers to appeal to the vast majority of buyers in this market segment, who were looking for low cost, practical transportation that was mechanically simple and dependable, and traditionally styled. Another car was needed to be competetive........
a back-to-basics "Falcon fighter". Thus, the Chevy II was born.
The Chevy II hit the showrooms in model year 1962. The car rode a 110 inch wheelbase. A four cylinder engine developing 90 horsepower was standard. A 120 horsepower six was available. There were three series, including a base 100 series starting at under $2000, a 300 series, and a top of the line Nova 400 series, featuring two body styles not available on Ford's Falson, a convertible and a hardtop. Needless to say, the Chevy II was an immediate success, with a production run of 326,600 in its very first year.
The Ember Red Nova 400 Sport Coupe in Ken's photograph is a 1963 model. The '63 brochure calls the Nova 400 "Chevy II's Smart-Stepping Prestige Leader". Sadly, '63 would be the last year for the Nova convertible. Although a 'Super Sport" option was available on the Nova hardtop and convertible in 1963, a V-8 option would not be available until the '64 model year. Popular options in 1963 included power steering, power brakes, all-transistor radios, air conditioning, and powerglide automatic transmission. Most owners opted for the 120 horsepower six. Very few buyers selected the 90 horsepower "super-thrift" four. In keeping with its low cost, economy compact "heritage", the brochure emphasizes "less wear and care", "high value at a likeable low price", "added durability and reduced maintenance requirements", and "traditional Chevrolet Quality".
Yes, the Chevy II proved to be a competent competitor to the Falcon in the Compact market as practical and economical transportation, and did so with a certain amount of style and class, especially in convertible and hardtop form. In later years, it would lose the Chevy II moniker and evolve as simply the Nova, taking on an entirely new "muscular" image, when fitted with more powerful V-8 engines and heavy duty racing suspensions. Ken, it's great to see two original first generation Chevy II Novas in this gallery. Next to this red '63, is a white 1965 hardtop coupe in this same gallery.
