Târgovişte

The third capital of the Romanian principality of Wallachia, Târgovişte began as a market town in the 14th century. While the city played a certain part in the 1989 Revolution - Nicolae and Elena Ceauşescu were tried and executed in the military barracks here - today Târgovişte is best known for its princely court complex and Chindia tower, established by Vlad III the Impaler. While a large chunk of the center was demolished and rebuilt during communism, enough of the old city remains to convey some of its former charm.
