Taipei 台北

The vast, modern capital of the Republic of China (better known as "Taiwan"), Taipei sprawls across its mountain basin in the north of the island. Built into an important administrative center by the Japanese, the city has seen massive development over the past few decades as the forefront of the Taiwanese economy. Although unrelentingly concrete and somewhat drab on the surface, the cityscape is peppered with attractive colonial edifices, fine 19th- and 20th-century shophouses, busy temples and grand Kuomintang-era monuments.
