Japan's fourth largest main island and historically somewhat of a bit player in the national scene, Shikoku remains one of the least explored corners of the country. Its name derived from the four historical provinces that subdivided it - Sanuki, Iyo, Tosa and Awa (today's prefectures of Kagawa, Ehime, Kōchi and Tokushima) - the island is perhaps best known for its laid-back pace of life and beautifully rugged scenery.
