Piteşti

An important market town dating from at least the 14th century, Piteşti is today one of Wallachia's largest industrial centers. Home to Romania's largest automotive company, Dacia, its economy is primarily based around related industries and oil refining. Connected to Bucharest by one of the only stretches of highway in the country, it was also once notorious for being home to Communist Romania's most fearsome prison and re-education program. Drastically re-altered in the 1950s and 1980s, Piteşti today retains little of its former self, but offers a good access point for historic Curtea de Argeş and the Transfăgărăşan highway.
