Lviv (Львів)

The premier cultural center and unofficial capital of western Ukraine, Lviv (Lwów, Lemberg, Lvov in Polish, German and Russian respectively) is now arguably the most significant and thoroughly intact tourist destination in the country. Polish for some 430 years after the decline of the Kievan Rus, the city later became the capital of Austrian Galicia and Lodomeria following the First Partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Under the rule of Poland again following World War II, it finally was merged with Soviet Ukraine after 1944, with most of its Polish inhabitants expelled to the 'Recovered Territories' of what is now western Poland.
