Kanazawa-jō 金沢城

Kanazawa, Ishikawa-ken, Japan view map

First founded by the Maeda family in 1583, Kanazawa Castle fell victim to numerous fires throughout its history. The first, in the early 17th-century, destroyed its short-lived donjon, and the second, far larger fire of 1759 took care of most of the rest. Rebuilt again from 1762, many of the structures succumbed to later outbreaks and an earthquake before another major fire in 1881 burnt down everything apart from the Ishikawa Gate. The Ishikawa-mon - pictured here - is now the only original structure remaining today (or rather the only structure not reconstructed in modern times). A pair of turrets, a warehouse and an interior gate were rebuilt in original style in 2001, based upon their forms in an 1809 reconstruction.
