Kakegawa-jō 掛川城

Kakegawa, Shizuoka-ken, Japan view map

A reconstruction only dating from 1993, Kakegawa castle was the first modern replica in Japan to be built using original techniques and materials. Originally built some 400 years ago by Imagawa Yoshitada, it later passed to a vassal of the Toyotomi clan under whose lordship it (and the surrounding town) thrived. The castle survived intact through the Edo period until being destroyed by an earthquake in 1854 and then collapsing in 1869.
