A minor, reconstructed castle (1957) in Beppu city, but home to the golden snake god, bestower of wealth and good fortune. Oddly, according to the castle's caretaker at the time of my visit, there is no certainty that a real castle ever stood on this site, much less one of this particular design. Which might lead one to conclude that Kifune-jō was put up just to attract tourists (in line with Beppu in general, really). My subsequent attempts to find information on this "castle" have largely convinced me that's precisely the case.
