First established at the Ota-gawa delta in 1589, Hiroshima castle was often alternatively referred to as Ri-jō - "carp castle." The Asano family controlled it for much of the Edo period, then it served as a military facility after the Meiji Restoration (during which many of its fortifications were dismantled). Incinerated by the atomic bomb on August 6th, 1945, the donjon was tastefully rebuilt in ferro-concrete in 1958.
