Iaşi

Romania's second-largest city and the capital of Moldavia from 1565-1861, Iaşi is one of the biggest cultural centers in the country and home to the oldest Romanian university. Boasting an impressive literary and artistic tradition dating to the 17th century, it was also once a great center of Jewish life (sadly snuffed out by the Antonescu regime and 1941 pogrom). Damaged in World War II, Iaşi went on to become an important industrial center, with much of its city center redeveloped into drab apartment blocks and stark modernist architecture. Despite this vandalism, most of its beautiful churches have survived, along with a number of fine public buildings and museums.
