Hijacking a layer mask in PS Elements

Make a Background copy. Make a New Adjustment Layer. Make adjustments if you want or just click OK.

Arrange layers as shown: Bkg copy on top, adjustment layer in the middle, background on the bottom.

Activate and highlight the top layer. Go to Layer>Group with Previous.

A little downward arrow appears in the top background copy layer. Click on the middle layer mask and edit.
