Mongolia

Andres and I spent an amazing month in Mongolia in June of 2003. We started our trip in the capital city, Ulaanbaatar. From here we flew north to Khuvsgul National Park where slept in very cold ger tents next to the frozen lake. Here we visited nomad families and took a 3 day horse trip around the lake where we visited a Shaman family who live solely off their herd of reindeer.

We then flew west to Tsambagarav Mountain, Khovd and Ulgii. At Tsambagarav Mountain we camped in small tents at the foot of the snowy peak. Here we spent time visiting nomad family and their herd of live stock and also we hiking and horse riding. On the way to Ulgii we visited Kazakh families and ate a horse leg while staying with one of the families. In the countryside many of the Kazakhs still survive by using eagles to hunt their prey.

We finally visited Kharkhorin, the ancient Mongol capital and also the highly endangered native Takhi horse at Khustai Nat'l Park.

Mongolia really was a trip of a life time and one we will always remember and often look back on as a truly beautiful and vast county!
