Order PASSERIFORMES

Pittas
They are plump forest birds with long legs and short tails what live on the ground and obtain their food by poking about amongst the leaves with the bill, not scratching with the feet, and hunting for worms, ants, lizards, beetles, and insects of all kinds; though they can fly quite well, they usually progress by immense bounds repeated at great speed, a habit that makes them easy to recognize in the field-if indeed any help is required in recognizing some of the most beautiful birds in the world. In dense cover they are easily overlooked, but their loud whistles, generally of two or three syllables, often reveal their presence. (Smythies, The Birds of Borneo, 1999)
