Order PASSERIFORMES

Jays, Magpies, Treepies and Crows
As traditionally constituted, a family of about 113 species found throughout the world, and characterized by stiff bristles covering the nasal opening, stiff primaries and rectrices, a tarsus with long frontal scales, and in all except the Crested Jay an unspotted juvenile plumage. Some species have a pouch beneath the tongue, and food is transported in this pouch or in the throat. In Borneo, the resident species of crow are rarely seen, though Slender-billed Crow may be spreading into open habitats. The other members of the family are more or less restricted to primary forest, so they contribute little to the day-to-day ornithological scene. (Smythies, The Birds of Borneo, 1999)
