I'd lost everyone and had been wandering drunk, hot and alone for over an hour. I sat down in some shade, my cell phone about to die and wondering how to get in touch with Karine, who was riding back with me the next day, had no cell phone, but was with Christophe who had a cell phone that was rolling straight to VMX. I heard a happy stream of French behind me and thought it was too bad none of the roommates were there. I thought I heard one of them say 'Maya' and wondered if they meant Maya maya or if maya was also a word in French that I didn't know. Thinking it would be worth the shot that they were from SF, I started thinking of how to say 'Hi, do you know my friend Maya' in French, which eluded me for a good half an hour, then thought, if they're from SF, they may know Karine. "Bon jour. Salut. Je cherche Karine Aggery". I can do that, no problem. I turn around and two feet from my face is Karine, about to stand up, holding the cell phone she just borrowed a second before to try and call me.
Boom. For real.
