New Zealand an island country in the south-western Pacific Ocean known for its geographic isolation is comprised of two main islands, a population of 4.4 million and a land mass slightly smaller than Italy. The larger more remote and scenic South Island is a natural paradise divided is along its length by the Southern Alps with its many glaciers, fjords and lush rain forests. The slightly flatter and more populated North Island settled by the Maori people is rich in Polynesian culture and known for its volcanoes, wineries and the vibrant cities of Wellington and Auckland.
Our journey started in the historic South Island city of Christchurch only days before it was devastated by a catastrophic earthquake (2nd in 6 months) resulting in New Zealand’s worst natural disaster in history. Our travels then took us high onto the glaciers of Aoraki / Mt. Cook, deep into the fern covered rain forests, to Queenstown and then to the remote western region and stunning Milford Sound where we boarded the 207 foot Oceanic Discoverer for a voyage tracing the eastern flanks of both the South and North Islands searching for marine mammals and New Zealand’s diverse array of sea birds such as Albatross, Shag, Petrels, Shearwaters and 3 types of Penguins. Our journey gave us an excellent perspective of New Zealand’s splendid landscapes, cultural heritage and unique wildlife.
