Birds of the Delta

Welcome to my Discovery Bay and California Delta wildlife and nature photo gallery.
As the waters from the Sierra Mountains make their way to San Francisco Bay they wind through a nearly endless network of rivers, tributaries and channels. The main rivers that feed this 1000 plus miles of waterways are the Sacramento, the San Joaquin and the Mokelumne. Originally used in the mid 1800s by the Gold Rush miners for transportation the rich soils of the Delta started to attract settlers and farmers. Today farming and unique waterside communities like Discovery Bay coexist in an area known for fishing, boating and other water oriented activities. The waterways around Discovery Bay and the California Delta are rich in wildlife with over 100 varieties of shore and trail birds as well as sea lions, beavers, otters, muskrats, turtles, snakes and a large variety of fish such as bluegill, striped/largemouth/smallmouth bass, sturgeon, catfish, shad, salmon, steelehead as well as crawdads.

You may have seen some of my images in local publications such as; The Bay & Delta Yachtsman magazine, The Delta Sun Times, The Delta Navigator newspaper, Black Diamond Living magazine, The Guide to Discovery Bay, The Discovery Bay Annual Calendar and Contra Costa County's 2007 & 2008 calendars.

This gallery contains images I captured in "My Backyard" the California Delta.
