Cuba is an archipelago of islands in the northern Caribbean with Havana the capital being only 90 miles south of Key West Florida. Cuba stretches west to east for over 750 miles and with just over 11 million people it is one of the most populous islands in the Caribbean. Cuba was originally discovered by Christopher Columbus and has had a long history of conflict and revolution. Historically the Cuban economy has been driven by mining and plantation agriculture (sugar, coffee, tobacco). Today tourism largely from Canada and Europe have surpassed agriculture as the leading driver of the Cuban economy. Visiting Cuba is like stepping back into time. We have had the privilege of visiting Cuba several times under a humanitarian license. One thing becomes incredibly clear once you visit the island nation of Cuba is that the US Embargo does nothing but hurt the people. The US allows trade with Iran but prevents it with our island neighbor, what sense does that make?
