black & white revisited

This gallery has been created so I can consider which of my black & white photos to submit to the 2007 Black and White Spider Awards competition. Not only do I want to see them all together myself, but I hope my sister and brother PBasers will share with me which photos they feel are the strongest. I also invite suggestions as to how I might strengthen the images I've posted here. As you know, with digital photos nothing is set in stone. It might help to know that the categories I'm considering entering are abstract, architectural, fine art, nature, people, photojournalism, still life, silhouette and portfolio. For the portfolio, I would be choosing from among the photos in my "Facing up to my face at 65" photo gallery. I'd also welcome your opinions as to which of those photos are strongest. This competition is rather expensive so I will be quite limited in the number of submissions I can afford to enter. Thanks for whatever help you can give me.

By the way, the photos in this gallery are in low resolution, but the photos I submit to the competition will be as high rez as they allow.

    There are so many images that speak to me, that i will have to spend some time with them before I can be of any help to you.

    I love this gallery, Patricia. Each image has a conviction and language all its own. How to choose a favorite? I am not an art critic--far from it--so I will go by my gut instincts. The images that speak to me the most are: 1, 2, 10, 12, 18, & 19. I think perhaps Phil had the right idea; there are no right or wrong choices, but rather a selection of which images speak more clearly that which you are trying to communicate. Good luck on a difficult decision.

    It is a pleasure to visit and evaluate your images. Phil makes a great point below. It is similar to making a speech: that is "has your message, be it, fun, pursuation, inspiration or similar, been conveyed effectively". All your photos are a delight to view but I chose the sunset as best (image 26) to me as it is different in BW and shows a fun time. I would like to see the titles for these pictures as they would help me understand your message behind each of them. This gallery has my vote.

    When I see a work of a person for the first time, I look for b&w galleries. Don't ask me why, but I think that's because I really love that kind of images.

    Here are some more questions you can ask about each of these images, Patricia. Your answers should be useful in helping you boil this group down to the most expressive submissions. How has abstraction intensify meaning? To what extent does incongruity express meaning. And what human values are expressed in the image? Ultimately, there is no such thing as "best" here -- it all depends on what you are trying to say. The degree to which an image accomplishes its purpose, goal, or objective is the most effective measurement of all. So as yourself "what am I trying to say" and then "how well did I say it, via abstraction, incongruity, and human values?" Good luck in your editing

    Patricia, I love all the photos but the two oustanding are image 15 and image 18, one shows the softnes and fragility of the world while the latter shows the strengh and humatarian relationship of human being . V.V V.
