Firefly, Up Close / July 16, 2004

Well, I tried for half an hour to get a decent shot of this fire fly, a.k.a. 'lightning bug' (what we always called them). However, I have an irrational fear of bugs, and just couldn't control the old handshake problem. Can you imagine? My siblings used to pull their 'lights' off their bodies and wear them on our faces when we were kids!
I was too lazy to get out one of my IS lenses or cameras, so I just messed with this in PS until I got SOMETHING that wasn't TOO hard to look at.

ewwwwwwwwwwwwww... I share your bugophobia. But what's this about your sibs pulling out their lights? Yikes!

I think you got a pretty decent creepy photo here so you should feel way pleased! And I will be thinking about this bug dismembering for a long time to come.

I never minded fireflies, though this 'under-carriage' shot is a little creepy. I've been trying to get a shot of one just as it lights up, but as I look for them, the mosquitoes are looking for me!! Not worth it. I think this shot turned out fine -- was it on glass or something?

Great macro. Your shaking hands don't show in this one. :) I used to pull the light off when I was a kid too and make a ring out of them. The thought makes me want to barf now. :)

It's creepy! We used to do the same thing, cathc them and put them in a jar (with holes in the top) until it made a huge glow!! Poor little bugs...what their kind has suffered!

Kind of a kewl photo if ya ask me. Can see the underbelly well. Could have used a mask and made his tail neon green! LOL
