Blackbacked Jackal (Scharbrackenschakal)

This Jackal was drinking at a waterhole at night and I photographed it with a flash extension. The light reflected in the back of his retinas caused this effect, as if he had light bulbs in his eyes. The same effect can be seen in other animals, like the large cats, which have great night vision due to been able to dilate their pupils to a large diameter, allowing as much light as possible to enter and get reflected into their retina.
