Listen UP!!!! How to make a clickable link!Posted by weed30 (My Page) on Thu, Mar 11, 04 at 13:33
I can't take
it anymore!
Y'all are posting web addresses that I have to copy and paste into my address bar and it's makin' me nuts. YES I AM LAZY!!! So I'm gonna teach you how to make a clickable link...pay attention now! Instead of just copying and pasting the URL of your target website or photo into your message, which will force people to copy and paste it into their browser, copy and paste the URL into the message you are posting, then add the tags before and after as shown: It will turn out like this: By adding the page reference command, (a href=), you are creating a link to the page on the web. Be sure and add a name for your link, (in this case, Black Swallowtail Butterfly), and end the command. (/a) It is so much simpler for people to click on the link instead of copying the URL and pasting it into the address bar. You can try out your newfound talent at the Test Forum on Gardenweb. Try it....you'll like it!!! Thank you! |
Amen!
Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! |
Thanks for the lesson Weed! Next question - how do you get a picture to appear in the text of a message? |
Further, how do you get the picture to appear as a small image in the middle of a text message? I can get the picture, but it can be huge. I don't know how to shrink it! |
Mother: I don't usually recommend this, because unless the
images are medium/small, they will take people who have dialup a long
time to download, which is even more irritating than doing the old
copy and paste.
If you don't know how to resize pictures to about 500 x 300 pixels or smaller, please don't do it. Posting a photo in the message: This code: Turns out like this:
Please note that you can do NEITHER of these functions if the photo is on your computer only. The photo must be hosted somewhere on the internet. I use pbase.com and it is very reasonable with lots of storage space and NO ADS. $23 per year is a bargain. Many of the free hosting sites will not let you use the second code that puts the photo in your message...costs them bandwidth. You can use the first code virtually anywhere...link to pics on the web, your website, etc. |
Man, I knew there was a way but had NO CLUE where to start. Thanks for the info. Any more pointers? |
Mom24: You have to resize the picture with photo editing
software.
Remember, 500 x 300 or less if possible. (The pic above is 187 x 200)
Once it is resized, upload it to your photo host and then use the
code described above.
If you don't have photo editing software, you can get a free and nifty program called Irfanview here. It is a small program and will not mess up your computer. |
Mizzou, I just HIGHLY recommend pbase.com to host photos. The
price really is a bargain, and having no banner ads etc. like the
free sites is terrific. They might still have a free trial period so
you can take it for a spin. I can't believe they only charge $23 per
year for so much storage space.
I like it for sending photos to family and friends too. Instead of emailing large attachments, I just send a link to my pbase page. They can decide if they want the photo, save it to their own PC and print it out on photo paper for themselves. If I think of any more tips, I'll add them later. |
Oh God bless you Weed!!! I was going to ask but I was too embarrassed. (I would insert "embarrassed face" here but I don't know how. HEY!! You can't leave without telling us how to make those faces!!) |
Thank you Thank you Thank you I love learning this new little tidbits.... |
Sharon...here ya go...
I collected those smileys here and there on the internet. When I found one I liked, I would right click on it and use "Save Picture As..." to save it on my pc. Then I went to pbase and uploaded them there. You can't see that gallery when you go to my pbase page (I don't think you can anyway) because some people were linking to my smilies. Linking to pictures on a site that someone else is paying for is considered bad manners, and actually may end up costing that person money because of the increased bandwidth usage. So when you want someone else's pic and it's not copyrighted, be
nice and save it to your pc first. Anyone who wants them can email me and I'll send them to you as an attachment. I'd have to get them all into one first, so that might take a day or two. |
weed--You just crack me up!!! Thanks so much for the education!!
You are great. Love your emotiocons or whatever they are, lol!
Now about pbase. I see that lots of folks here use it and the pics look great and all, but when I read their fine print I thought they said linking to boards like this was a no-no. Did I misunderstand?? Or are you guys using pbase here just being naughty! LOL! Thanks again! |
Thanks Weed!
I like the pic you inserted of Mr. Depp. (hubba hubba) |
Forgive me my sins, but can't you just copy and paste the address instead of actually typing all that? |
Can I add a tidbit here?
When you do an initial posting and want to put in a clickable link, there is no place to do it on the initial page, but once you hit preview you can add it on the bottom of the preview page before you post it. If you have more than one link use the href mentioned above for the extras. It also helps if you test you links from your preview page before posting and to check whether you have made the photos public if need be. |
Buglady, linking is a No-no if you didn't pay for pbase; ie you
are using the free trial. I have never had a problem. Except for my
smilies, I still prefer the clickable link. Pictures right in the
post are h*ll for people with dialup.
civilmind - hubba hubba is right...when I look at that photo, my mind ain't so civil! |
Weed---can you add this to the FAQ section over in appliances?
So I won't forget it all tomorrow?....
Thanks! BTW, anyone see the previews of that new movie with Mr. Depp in glasses and looking very good? Whew... |
weed, Is that html code? I finally did a link last week, but I just cut and pasted it. Sheshebop |
This is great! Many thanks! ;^D
(Now if you just post a picture of Ralph Fiennes or Colin Firth...yum.) |
Yes it's html. The chicken beaks (greater than and less than
signs) around the proper commands make the code execute. You must
use the commands exactly as typed, leave a space where there is a
space shown, and no spaces otherwise.
Fairegold, I can put a post over there linking to this one. |
One other tip so that when clicking on the link, it will open in
a new page. Place the URL in quotes, add a comma, then type
target=new_window. See below:
"http://www.myknobs.com/aqdehaandbaa172.html", target=new_window OR you can right click on the link and click Open in New Window. I really hate it when I click on a link and it opens in the same browser window. Thanks Weed! |
LMAO Weed, please don't hold back, tell us how you feel!
It'd be kinda nice if we could have a lasting "How To" page and/or a lasting page on some of the more FAQ. Elizabeth :) |
Completley agree with you Elizabeth! Especially one with
acronyms. There is a thread on the Building Forum that is pretty
comical. It all started with someone asking what DH stands for.
I still don't know what YMMV stands for. Kris |
kimmers, no, thank YOU! I didn't know that one!
YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary Elizabeth, we can have a FAQ page on any forum, but one of us has to maintain it. The other problem is the link to the FAQ is up top. You know how people are, they don't look around first and just post a question. I plan on saving this thread for future use! |
Here is a link that might be useful: Example of FAQ on soil forum (it's really good btw!)
you're mileage may vary |
Weed - Your welcome. Glad you brought it up! I'm currently
taking web design classes so all this stuff is fresh in the mind!
You can actually name the target anything you want but new_window fits the action you want it to take. |
Me again :) I looked at the Soil Forum's FAQ and that would be
great to have here! Especially when people ask frame vs. frameless,
what is full extension, MDF vs. particle board vs. plywood, etc.
etc. If they ask, we can point them to the FAQ rather than us doing
a search for them or wading through our many saved threads.
I should really get back to work. Gosh, I have NO ambition today! |
Weed,
You're a god, thanks, and I've been a terrible ignoramus on this very issue of linking. Kris |
Please, please don't use the target=new_window
code or you'll be despised by people with the more recent browsers
that can have multiple tabs (different web pages on each tab, but
all in the same window). As was pointed out, I strongly
recommend you leave people the choice of right-clicking and
selecting how they want to open the link if they prefer to leave
their current window alone when following another link.
Another reason to embed the html code around the URL (or just use the "Link" boxes below the Message area) is to avoid pasting those ultra-long URLS into your post as plain text. Otherwise, the forum software stretches the page width to the full length of the URL, which then requires horizontal scrolling to read each line throughout the entire thread. That's also a real PITA when it happens. Lastly, there are some posters who apparently don't edit their posts directly in the Message box or perhaps insert typewrite-style carriage returns at the end of every line even if not at the end of the paragraph. The end result is posts that don't wrap "normally", and usually format more like newspaper columns, which leads to excessive vertical scrolling. The forum software will handle line wrapping within the Message box and as displayed on the resulting web page, so there's no need to force a return at the end of every line. IMHO, this is somewhat less offensive than being too wide, but still makes for unpleasant reading. |
thanks, weed! even though i've linked before, I posted over in the test area just in case, and it worked. it's easier for us Mac people- no fancy commands- all we have to do is put in the address http:// www. etc, etc, |
kecs, that's GODDESS (hehe)
BargainHunter - thanks for the tip on the new window. And yes, those ultra long URLS copied into a post as plain text that stretch the page are maddening! |
I have a question please, how can you tell if someone is linking to a picture on your website? I've seen people with pictures on their sites that I know they've got off mine, and I know not to directly link to images on others' sites myself, but it hadn't occurred that they could be doing it to me! Eek! |
Here is a link that might be useful: or not, my site, which has nothing to do with kitchens AT ALL!
jen, when you find a photo on another site that you think is
yours, right click on the photo, then look at "Properties". If the
URL that shows up is yours, then they are direct linking to your
website. You can send them an email asking to stop.
What is MORE fun is to change the photo on your website to something, um...interesting ;) Then it will show up on their site. (wish I had an evil grin smiley...) |
I thought that would be one way - I was hoping there might be
another. Since your suggestion requires that I find the sites first!
It's OK if they have a link to my site too, as I have tracking and
go to check out what they're saying about us, but if they're just
nicking my pics... oh well. I like the picture swap idea!
cheers Jennifer |
What perfect timing for this post. I am with PBase (paid) on weed's reccomendation, but I am still having problems posting, pictures (always) & links sometimes. Just today I tried to post on the cooking, Kitchen table, and on the test forum. I have the commands correct, but I am going to my picture, right clicking on properties, then pasting the properties into the command link, is that wrong? should I go to the address line and copy that instead? Weed or anyone please help... |
Jennifer, I did a Google search and you will probably find something to fix your site: |
Here is a link that might be useful: Google search
I've been guilty of linking a pic right off the manuf website (bad girl! I was lazy) but its a riot when its done via Ebay. I had one guy link the pic from one of my completed auctions for a Braun electric toothbrush to his current auction. When I realized this, I swapped out the picture and put a dirty old nailbrush (you know, like something to scrub the floor with) in its place LOL! That was funny. |
Thanks Weed, I'll see if I can get my head round that. Or just
keep a stricter eye out for sites with pics of John Tams on, it's in
my self-written job description anyway!
Jennifer |
happytime_ca: Don't use the properties URL on pbase. Open your
picture, copy the URL from the address bar, then add .jpg to the end
of that URL.
If you use the URL off the properties box, it will only work for a short time, if at all. (Notice all the extra wording in the properties URL.) |
happytime: I posted to your post at the test forum with the
correct command language.
LOL @ Gina!! |
I encourage everyone to google for "html tutorial" and pick one
you like. You should find a few thousand. The ones at universities
(.edu) are usually a good choice. The stuff is actually very easy
taken one step at a time.
Then test your effort in the test forum. And the code for that link was Yep, you can do <b>bold</b> and <i>italic</i> an' all kindza funky stuff. I do it for a living, but consider it like do-it-yourself web remodeling! |
I am so glad you posted this. Even though I've played around on
the Test forum, it doesn't attract a lot of attention. I didn't know
how do do smaller pictures. I have Camedia, so I can resize my pix.
I don't like posting pix that way, unless it's really, really
necessary (which is unusual). I used to be able to do the clickable
link within my text, but Webshots won't let me do it anymore. I
joined pbase, but can't find my password! Easy fix!
Thank you again! |
You CAN resize the picture if it is hosted in a larger format-
instead of just < img src= yoururlhere > modify the size by changing the script to read < img height=200 width=300 src=yoururlhere > It will not affect the SIZE of the file, but will shrink it down to a smaller size (200x300 pixels in the case above, or whatever you decide to use) |
Mcflyfi - that's great to know! Will the size of the file still load slowly for dialup, despite less pixels? |
Weed-YES!! The file is still the same size as hosted, you're just changing the way it looks, size-wise on the user end. So, a large file, adjusted for size on a bb using the script, will STILL load slowly for dial up. But it will fit better on the bb format- no scrolling off the end to fit an "original" size photo. |
Well, about the only part of this discussion that I understand
is Johnny Depp, but I must say, I've enjoyed the "education"!
I just bought one of those single-use Kodak digital cameras that gives you the option of receiving a CD with your prints. Haven't used it yet, as I intend to take some "before" and "after" photos with it when our remodel gets started. I guess I'll open a PBase account when I'm ready to post. Thanks for the info, Weed (and everyone else)! Sue |
Anyone know what "a href" and "src" stand for? "img" is "image," presumably. |
src = "source"
a href = "hypertext reference link" |
Weed, you lost me...I haven't read anything after the JD picture
:)) But I did just REorder the Pirate movie from Netflix!!
Monica |
He is rather yummy looking in that movie, isn't he? |
Weed and everyone, not at all sure that I understand this but
will give it a try next time. Char |
Not to cause anymore confusion, but it seems to me it is just as
easy to open a separate browser (Internet Explorer) window, find the
page to which you want to create a link, highlight the address,
right click your mouse and hit copy, then come back to this page,
put the mouse in the optional link box and right click again and
this time hit paste.
That works for me, much easier than remembering html and I'm only constrained by the speed of the connection. If you are using AOL for your connection, you can minimize it, double click the big blue E on your desktop and you'll get an Internet Explorer screen that will take you to where you want to go. I routinely have 3 or 4 separate windows open so I can follow different pages. Elizabeth |
ditto Elizabeth |
Elizabeth and Pammo, yes, that is usually what I do. The method I listed was for people that want to have more than one link in a single post. ie: they want to show the tile, counter and cabinets for opinions on if they go together. Very often, space for only one link using the Optional Link URL box is not enough. |
Here's another useful tip... How to post clickable
thumbnails. This way you can post a picture to the forum that is
small. As Weed said, posting large pictures to the forum is bad
form! But you can set it up so that when someone CLICKS on
the photo, a large image comes up.
You need two versions of your picture. The thumbnail should be no bigger than 300 x 200. I use around 200 x 150. The full size version is usually best at 640 x 480, so that folks that have their monitors set to LARGE TEXT can see the whole picture. In my example, the thumbnail picture is at: and the fullsize picture is at: The HTML code is a combination of the two types Weed posted: and it looks like this: Right click and select open in new window if you don't want to "overwrite" the forum page. |
Pretty kitchen!!!
And there in your post is a great example of "stretching the forum". The html code line is long, which widened the page, so now one has to scroll back and forth to see the whole thing. This illustrates what happens when someone copies and pastes just a web address only (no link) and the address is very long. Not criticizing you sscutchen, glad it happened so others would see what was referred to earlier. |
Oh my. So much technical stuff. Weed, you made my day just by posting Johnny Depp. That's enough for me! |
Johnny Depp is a babe..I'm not sure about this technical stuff either. I don't even have a digital camera yet. I'll have to catch up later. |
And Weed, I actually REDUCED the font size of the HTML parts in
my post, in order to try to minimize the stretch!
My screen resolution runs 1024x768. And my browser default font size is on the smaller side. So all of the HTML code fit for me without scrolling. But as I said when suggesting BIG pictures be no bigger then 640x480, many folks can have settings that are quite a bit different. |
Steve and weed30--I'm just a little confused about the "stretch"
thing. Does this vary for different people? In reading these posts,
I don't get one of those really long lines that go out to the right
forever. I have seen that, but I'm not getting it here. But, weed30,
if I understand you correctly, you do get a line that goes on.
Right? And Steve, from your post, I get that whole string in nearly
microscopic type. So, does weed30 not see it like I see it?
This has been a great help. If the issue is that wide, seemingly no right margin line...yes, I want to avoid doing that to people. Short answer...what causes this to be different for different people? Our computers? Our internet provider? Just curious, without getting too techy! I definitely need to save this thread!!
|
SSCutchen, love your kitchen, what color are the walls?
Weed, I have a 17" monitor and did not get the wrap effect! If I had a 15" would it make that difference? Linda S |
MomTo4Kids:
When I entered the text to show the HTML code, I used a FONT tag to reduce it one size from whatever the user has as their default, like this: I hoped this would make it fit better, but without making it too small to read. The default is set by each person's browser preferences. Linda_S: The color is Sherwin Williams Nubby Wool. I'm not sure it is a current color still, but I'd theink they'd still be able to look up the formula. Thanks for the kind words on the kitchen! Here's what we started with! Someone said it looked like a hospital nurse station! |
OMG it DOES look like a hospital nurses station! You did an outstanding job on your remodel! |
Thanks for the lesson!! |
weed...save this post and repost it every 6 months for the
newcomers! It's great!
Steve...you're kitchen is beautiful. In the first picture, is that a bay window in the room off the kitchen or some fancy "bump out" work with the walls? Are you in a gallery somewhere to see more pix? Deb |
Weed, I loved your post and thought it was hilarious! I could feel your pain. I feel badly for everyone out there who was suffering in silence. I only just figured out how to get line drawings into posts, with the help of a nice guy in the remodeling forum. Question: I don't understand why people don't just use the "optional link url" box available after the "message" box. Am I missing something? For anyone who's interested, here is a link to HTML Goodies. It gives you slightly more non-tech background on Weed's topic. Weed's post is the best, however. Heather |
Here is a link that might be useful: HTML Goodies
heatherk9 - Thanks ;)
The way the posting is set up here causes people to not use the URL box. When you start a new post, there is no "Optional Link URL". You have to write your post, then click Preview, then scroll down below the Preview to the editing area. Below *that* is the first time you see the URL box. If you've been here for awhile, you figure it out. Shaun & Mom24, thanks/you're welcome! |
Bump |
For those who are curious about how something is done on a web
page, an easy thing to remember is to use your browser's option to
see the "Page Source" coding. It's the raw code and content
interpreted by your browser and displayed, and may at first appear
as lots of gobbledy-gook, but don't let it intimidate you. Web pages
here on the forums are relatively simple in complexity compared to
some of the major sites elsewhere, making these pages a relatively
easy place to develop your knowledge. While all html coding can be
entered as plain text, you'll also see why special editing software
just for html coding / web page development has evolved.
Check your browser's drop-down menus, probably under View, and select Page Source or Source or whatever similar option your browser offers. With a little searching (Ctrl-F) for some text related to your item of interest, you'll usually find the related codes close by. |
