Dog proof your counter

I got this brilliant idea from the internet, and it works! Put 10 - 15 pennies or small rocks in 6 empty soda cans.
Tape the holes closed, and tie the cans together using the pull tabs, about 10" apart. At one end tie a tempting treat (that's cheese in the picture).
Wait for counter surfing dog. Dog will grab cheese, and you can figure out what happens next.
My counter surfer grabbed the cheese ONE TIME, and has never done it again. She will look up at the counters, but is too afraid to take anything anymore :)

That icky brown string was all I had, but it turned out to be a good thing. It has a very distinct odor because it is jute.
I now just leave a few little coils of the jute on the counter so she connects the smell to "the scary bad thing". Hehe!

UPDATE: Through some kind of secret doggie psychotherapy, administered by my beagle no doubt, Lola has overcome her fear of the countertop and is at it again. ARGH!!
