I don't live there anymore - I did that tile about 15 years ago.
weed3010-Jul-2015 20:24
Yes I did. She died in 2007 :(
weed3008-Aug-2006 15:32
By 'march', do you mean how they run around very quickly to choose the spot where they will pupate? If so, then yes, mine did that. It was interesting to watch - they almost seemed nervous about the whole thing :)

Thank you so much for the information on cleaning granite and your homemade pH neutral cleaning solution. I live out in the country and have isopropyl alcohol and Dawn already- so I was glad that I didn't have to drive to town to buy a special cleaner. Your "boring" page was just the help I was looking for!

Thanks!

Hi Weed,

We loved your kitchen. It inspired my husband and I in our kitchen remodel. We ended up using tropical brown granite also and it is beautiful. The only disappointment was the fact that our granite has a lot of pits that we couldn't see very well when we picked out the slab. Does your countertop have this also?

Thanks,
Julie

Weed30, your under cabinet recipe card clip looks like just what I'm looking for. Would you tell me where you found it?
weed3002-Jun-2004 13:04
Wow, thanks! I ended up buying a different card reader that works. My latest problem is that my CD drive doesn't work :( I'm getting a new PC this week, this one is on it's last leg. Even has trouble rebooting these days.

I know this puts me in the minority, but I simply don't like the look of an undermount! Reminds me of a prison toilet. (no, I've never been in prison but you see them on tv....)
All the hoo-ha about being able to wipe stuff right into the sink with an undermount is overrated, in my opinion. I can do that with my sink just fine. My plumber put a bead of clear caulk or silicone around the edge so nothing gets trapped.

Other points: they're easier to install and easier to replace if that is ever needed. They are less expensive since the fabricator doesn't have to finish the edge of the sink opening, and you don't have to worry about getting a fabricator that does a lousy job getting your cutout right. (Undermounts require a negative or positive reveal, and sometimes they're not very even.)

Whatever you decide, be sure and see the sink in person to look at the finish. I love the nice brushed finish on my Kindred, but didn't care for the finish on an Elkay I saw.

Good luck!

We are agonizing over drop in or undermount sink. What made you decide to go drop in if we may ask.

Thanks Melanie! Tell those kids to get scholarships so you can have your dream kitchen now ;)
Melanie 22-Mar-2004 17:17
Weed--your kitchen is GORGEOUS--love reading your posts on GW/THS. Ane when I FINALLY get my kitchen re-done--(the kids SHOULD be through college in 7 years)I will remember your sage advice about CABINETS!

weed3008-Mar-2004 19:41
They are made by Schrock, but after I got them they were bought by someone, I forgot who. They are Maple with a honey stain. Although they are very pretty, I would not recommend them anyway because they are framed cabinets. To understand the difference and get the names of manufacturers of frameless cabinets, go here:

Jon 08-Mar-2004 17:56
What is the exact brand and color/model of your cabinets???
weed3031-Jan-2004 04:50
Hi, my cabinets are Maple with a "honey" stain. That is typically one step up from natural. Thanks for the compliment!
bonniea 30-Jan-2004 04:44
I guess I missed or forgot what kind of cabinets you have - are they red birch? They are really beautiful, and your whole kitchen has a lovely feel to it.

Thank you Renee'! Wishing you a speedy recovery :)

Oh Weed, I just dropped by after reading your Butterfly thread in the Gallery. I know that I'll be back next week after my surgery. Looking at you photos should help me heal faster; they are beautiful. You are very talented.

Graham Cracker Chewies

Crust
1 1/3 cups graham cracker crumbs
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 cup butter, (1 stick), melted
2 tablespoons all purpose flour

Topping

1 ½ cups packed brown sugar
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1/3 cup graham cracker crumbs
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 large eggs beaten

Preheat oven to 350°

Prepare the crust: Stir the graham cracker crumbs, sugar, and flour in a mixing bowl. Add butter and mix until moist and crumbly. Press the mixture firmly and evenly in the bottom of a 8 x 8 or 9x 9 baking pan. Bake 20 minutes.
Prepare topping:

Stir the brown sugar, baking powder, graham cracker crumbs, nuts and salt together. Mix eggs and vanilla, add to brown sugar mixture.
Pour the topping over the baked crust, bake for an additional 20 minutes. Topping will still be a little jiggly and will settle as it cools. Let cool completely, then cut into squares.

You can double the recipe and use a 13 x 9 pan.

How about sharing the recipe
for Ann T's Graham Cracker Chewies?
Or is it found someplace on the web?
weed3012-Aug-2003 05:57
Glad you liked the recipe...I've made it since with ground beef and also with just cheese. They're all good ~ the sauce recipe, which I found on the net, is the key!
rudejohn 07-Aug-2003 01:09
I tried your recipe for Chicken Enchiladas and it was wonderful. Of course, I'll try to perfect it a bit by adding some of my own ingredients, but THANKS!

Yes, love the cabs going to the ceiling. I was worried at first that it would be TOO much, but once they went up they looked great. The two with glass help lighten up the look of that wall. I do need a stepstool to reach the topmost shelves, but I store things that I don't use often there. You'll notice that we did not use crown molding - we were very lucky that our ceiling is level so there are no gaps above the cabinets. If your ceiling is not level, you will end up with a gap above one end of the cabinet run, so either get crown molding, which can be scribed to hide such problems, or make sure it's level!
carnelian 27-Jun-2003 07:05
Are you happy with your cabinets going to the ceiling? We're thinking of doing the same thing with very similar cupboards, but on all three walls in a not-too-big G shaped kitchen.

If you're just looking at it in your C drive, it will not be animated. You have to upload it to your webspace or picture host. Another way to test it is to insert it in an email. Have fun!

Thanks for sharing your gifs. When I save one to my hard drive, it is not animated. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks! hot_shoe_dan@hotmail.com

Tropic Brown is lighter than Dakota Mahogany. I've not seen Indian Mahogany. I personally would not put Tropic Brown with pure white cabinets. I would put it with off white or a white that had some tan or brown glaze added on top. There are no white flecks in my Tropic Brown. Some cream, but overall it is a brown/black granite. If I were doing white cabinets, I would go with a granite that had white/cream and a color, like blue or green. There is a very pretty granite called Cream Azul Bahia that has cream, grey, black and blue. Then there is a green one called Silver Sea Green that would look good with white. There are so many wonderful granites that I think you just need to visit as many granite yards as you can to find the ones that really "wow" you.

The thing that stands out to me is that you mention wanting to be able to change colors and decor over the years. If that is your mindset, I would recommend laminate. Hundreds of great colors and patterns, and quite inexpensive. Changing it out after 5 or so years is pretty painless. If you get granite, you are pretty much "stuck" with the tones and colors that go with it. (unless you are rich and can spend thousands every few years to replace it :)

I hate Corian, so I can't really be objective about it :) I think it is a lousy looking surface and doesn't hold up well. It is also terribly overpriced. I truly think the new laminates from Formica, Wilsonart and Pionite are better looking and more durable. Another excellent option is Silestone or Caesarstone. They have some terrific colors and a nice looking product that is very durable. Kind of reminds you of granite, but much more uniform.

I am very happy with our oven mounted under the counter -- but I don't use my oven all that much so I might not be a good person to ask! I do 90% of my cooking on the cooktop. When I do use the oven it is for things like roasts that take a long time to cooks so bending down to get them out is not a big deal, since I'm only doing it infrequently. For a person that bakes alot or generally uses their oven alot, I think a wall mounted oven is better.

Dear Weed30,

I am still in the planning stages of my remodel. Everything is coming together except the countertops - really undecided about color and type. My cabinets are Brookhaven - painted white Maple, floor is medium oak. Is Tropic Brown granite lighter than Dakota or Indian Mahogany?? I would like a gold/beige color granite but those (like New Venetian Gold) have too much movement for me. My kitchen is fairly small. So now I am looking at the browns/blacks since they seem to be more consistent and less "busy." Do you think Tropic Brown would go with white cabinets? Are there any white flecks in it? I also like Carioca Gold, but I don't know if it would go with white cabinets - I've seen it with maple cabs at Expo. My other option is to go with Corian in a more neutral beigy color. I really want to stay fairly neutral so I can change decor and colors over the years.
Also, are you happy with your under-counter oven? Does it seem too low? That type of oven will be an option for me - to save counter space.
Thanks, Beth

Dear Weed30,

What a pleasure to see your beautiful kitchen pics! My wife and I are remodeling a similiar L shaped kitchen and we selected Schrock maple (cider finish) cabinets, tropical brown granite on our countertops & our island, stainless appliances, tech track lighting with amber meteor pendants above island. Quite thrilling to see what it will look like - demolition for us starts next week! We are also putting in a Kahrs Oak copenhagen floor as well.

Hi Weed30! I just re-looked at your pics. I love your house; your kitchen is gorgeous - just my taste! Love that dining room rug, too.
Isn't it fun??

Dear Weed30,

My Wife and I have selected the same shaker cabinets you chose for your Kitchen. We are currently in the design phase and are experiencing sticker shock due to the $7500.00 quote we got for the cabinets. Our layout is somewhat like yours and I was wondering if you could tell me whether this price we were quoted is similiar to what you paid for your cabinets, including the kick panels and pulls? You may email us at elo.ofodile@reuters.com. Thanks in advance.

BTW...You Kitchen is gorgeous!!!
