14-JAN-2007

14-Jan-2007

I took this late in the day, and it booted the previously posted picture for the day.

We were catching up on Christmas and New Year's celebrations with family from the San Francisco Bay Area.
This is an old German New Year's tradition of ours called "Feuerzangenbowle" (fire tongs punch).
You heat up red wine, orange and lemon juice, and spices. Then you place a sugar cone soaked with flammable rum on top,
and light it on fire. The burning sugar caramelizes and drips into the punch with much hissing! The end result is just delicious.

I hadn't planned ahead for the shot, so this was just a quick handheld exposure in the near dark!

This is a really cool picture. And what a neat tradition. Might have to try that sometime.
