April 13 - waterfall on tributary of Parker Creek

Here's another beautiful waterfall in the Pisgah National Forest that had slipped under the radar. Bernie recently found this one by bushwhacking down Parker Creek from the waterfall on Double Branch shown on this map on the left. After studying the maps further he found a much easier way with minimal off trail stuff. From Hwy 215, drive 4.5 miles west on SR1324 and park at the gated FR5035 on the left. Don't block the gate. The hike is 4-5 miles round trip - mostly easy with moderate off trail which will require GPS or map and compass skills. One wrong turn and you could end up lost or worse - on private property and being the entertainment for the evening.

Walk up the improved for logging forest road until it ends, 30-45 minutes depending on how much goofing around you do along the way. VIEW on the map is a section of the road where we had views of the surrounding mountains. When the good road ends, follow the older logging road to the right and along the ridge line. This is still easy walking and easy to follow, but somewhat overgrown. After 10-15 more minutes, this ends at a briar patch which is SCHWACK on the map. That's the end of the trail - the rest is wandering around in the forest. On our visit the vegetation hadn't greened up and the wandering was fairly easy. We just followed Bernie.

I hope to do a write up on my main site, but for now you're on your own from here. Shouldn't be a problem if you have off trail skills. For safety sake I will tell you that you have to find the place on the map where the 2 unnamed creeks come together above the falls. Cross both creeks above this point and go down the right side of the waterfall. Stay safe out there!
