Hidden Falls

On page 30 of Jim Bob Tinsley's book 'The Land of Waterfalls', he mentions a Hidden Falls below Rainbow Falls on the Horsepasture River. His one sentence mention is "Often heard but seldom seen is Hidden Falls in a ravine below Rainbow Falls." Most people including me assumed he meant the small falls on the Horsepasture River a short distance below Rainbow Falls. This small falls isn't really in a ravine and Tinsley doesn't actually say it's on the Horsepasture. Bernie has been checking out another possibility and wanted to show us. We parked at the new parking for the Horsepasture River in Gorges State Park and took the Rainbow Falls Trail down to the river. At river level is a creek that feed into the river and right across the creek is a camp site. Well Bernie went up this smaller creek and sure enough found a waterfall up it. This is only part of it - the rest is either covered in downfall or has shrub grown up around it. In Tinsley's day, this was probably a lot more open and the several sections may have appeared more as one waterfall, so this may indeed be Hidden Falls! It's certainly in more of a ravine than the other falls. If you want to check it out, cross the creek, head to the back of the campground, and look for the overgrown old road heading up the creek. It comes to the lower cascades which I didn't shoot. Then go up to the left and around to the top of the cascades to see this upper part. It turned out to be another great day. Met some nice folks and saw 3 waterfalls that were new to me. Life is good.
