Roan Mountain 5

My original destination was Grassy Ridge and Grassy Bald. Kevin Adams does a great description of this hike in his book 'North Carolina's Best Wildflower Hikes - the Mountains'. The man knows his shooting locations and it was still kind of early, so I drove back out to Carver's Gap and headed up the trail for the 3 mile hike. I fell back on one of our hiking mottoes - 'you don't know if you don't go'. As I crested Round Bald I could see a few flame azaleas in bloom near the trail, but nothing else. Jane Bald was no different so I continued on the AT to the split and took the Grassy Ridge Trail. As I headed up this trail the rhodo blooms picked up nicely, but I didn't stop and continued to the end. A group of hikers from South Carolina was already there and invited me on the rocks for the foggy view pictured here. At one point one of them spotted a patch of blue sky and we all let out a cheer! It was gone in about 5 seconds. I guess I should have snapped a photo of them so they could be famous. It was now noon and I'm not sure how long they had been there, but they gave up and headed back.
