Green Flash Animation

Fort Stevens State Park, Oregon

This is a crude animation of a sunset taken at Fort Stevens State Park. It is a series of photos taken without the idea of making them into an animation. After I got a green flash picture, I decided to try to make an animation. I removed the sideways slide of the Sun as it sets, so it appears that it was taken near the equator. The time intervals between pictures is also inconsistant, thus the crude adjective. The animation covers 6 minutes and 14 seconds. The eighth frame of the animation contains a red flash as pointed out to me by Les Cowley of Atmospheric Optics. If you are interested in the wonderful variety of optical effects the planet can offer, visit his site at: www.sundog.clara.co.uk/atoptics/phenom.htm
The animation only works at original size.

My husband and I have watched many green flashes from the seventh floor condo on the SW Florida Gulf Coast.
Our beach is always lined with folks there to watch the sunset and we can observe it just a bit longer than those
on the beach. This animation is simply wonderful! We always look for the signs that we may see a green flash...some red and blue in the clear sky and most generally the water is calm. The shape of the sun does take on that half-moon shape as it nears the horizon. The flash is usually very bright green and very short. I have never observed the total orange sky as the flash concludes. I'll keep watching... THANK YOU!
