Manora or Manoro (in Sindhi) is a small island (2.5 km²) located just south of the Port of Karachi in Pakistan. The island is connected to the mainland by a 12 kilometre long causeway called the Sandspit. Manora and neighbouring islands form a protective barrier between Karachi harbour to the north and the Arabian Sea to the south.

Manora is a popular picnic spot because of the long sandy beaches along the southern edge of the island, which merge into the beaches of the Sandspit and then extend several kilometres to the beaches at Hawkesbay. At the southeastern end of Manora island is the tallest lighthouse (28 m or 91 feet high) in Pakistan. The island lies approximately 15-20 minutes by boat ride from mainland Karachi but there are no good hotels available for an overnight stay.

Hi , My Name is sayed , I born in Manora and my I used to goto Kindergarten KPT , loved my teacher named Miss Edna (who moved to U.S now ) and miss other mates in Kindergarten manora named Itrat and Shahnila , Now I live in Plymouth , UK and I sometime I think time is flying with the speed of light , when I was in manora I was a lil kid now I'm 30years married man :D , no doubt such a lovely place I still miss the epic peninsula with love and hospitality.

Saint Andrew closed in 1960 , That were the Golden days ,love & harmony among residents. Manora is now very changed , empty houses , structural changes etc. I now being a Counselor & Vice President of Manora Cantonment have started plantation scheme , we have planted trees from Himalya Road to PNS both roadrs , Beach Road and at the beach . I am trying my best to uplift it with the limited sources & funds from CBM . Please pray for me to get Allah's help an have success in my misssion (A Green Manora) My love to all old residents & please see me during your visit an have of cup of tea/cofee if you people like . Hello everyone, I am seeking some information about a St. Andrew School that operated in Manora in the early 1950s. My father was a lieutenant in the Navy and I was born in Manora. I attended St. Andrew (or St. Andrews) from 1955 until about 1958. I am trying to figure if it was affiliated with any particular church for an essay that I am writing. If anyone knows anything about this school or has any memories then please send me an email at: qaaniq@yahoo.com I live abroad now, but visit Pakistan every year. On my last trip in 2012, I spent an afternoon to Manora. It was much changed, and our house that was on the road leading to the lighthouse is now some sort of a school. I wanted to go in and see the layout and see if what I remember is correct, but it was a weekend and the place was closed.

Love to all those ,who used to live here . very first day when I joined the CBM as board member & vice President I choosed to start plantation programme as first step and Board president supported me to start the project . By grace of God Manora is now getting green a day by day with new look , Buildings have been painted in white and roads paving in progress . A new Park has been built at Haji Hotel Plot. Memories of 1953 are still fresh in my mind. I was studying in class 3 in a school run by KPT, ZHP School where Razia Karam Illahi was my class teacher. Its cool breeze of the morning with sea gulls flying over was so refreshing. Sundays used to be very crowded. I still remember hawkers shouting "AA MANOREY KHA PAKOREY"

Found this site by accident. Mum is always talking about her childhood memories on Menora where her dad was stationed on Menora with the British Army for a period of 3 years from 1932. She had an idyllic time playing on the beautiful beaches and going to the Army school on the island. Its a shame that it is now deserted but glad that people are still visiting those beautiful beaches. Apparently there once was a lovel church as well.

Dear Friends, here is a small history of the island, hope it would interest those who love Manora. The area of Karachi was known to the ancient Greeks by many names: Krokola, the place where Alexander the Great camped to prepare a fleet for Babylonia after his campaign in the Indus valley; 'Morontobara' island (ancient Manora island near Karachi harbour), from where Alexander's admiral Nearchus set sail; and Barbarikon, a port of the Indo-Greek Bactrian kingdom. Alexander's writers: Then making their way through two rocks, so close together that the oar-blades of the ships touched the rocks to port and starboard, they moored at Morontobara, after sailing some three hundred stades. The harbour is spacious, circular, deep, and calm, but its entrance is narrow. They called it, in the natives' language, 'The Ladies' Pool,' since a lady was the first sovereign of this district. When they had got safe through the rocks, they met great waves, and the sea running strong; and moreover it seemed very hazardous to sail seaward of the cliffs. For the next day, however, they sailed with an island on their port beam, so as to break the sea, so close indeed to the beach that one would have conjectured that it was a channel cut between the island and the coast. The entire passage was of some seventy stades. On the beach were many thick trees, and the island was wholly covered with shady forest. About dawn, they sailed outside the island, by a narrow and turbulent passage; for the tide was still falling. And when they had sailed some hundred and twenty stades they anchored in the mouth of the river Arabis. There was a fine large harbour by its mouth; but there was no drinking water; for the mouths of the Arabis were mixed with sea-water. However, after penetrating forty stades inland they found a water-hole, and after drawing water thence they returned back again. By the harbour was a high island, desert, and round it one could get oysters and all kinds of fish. Up to this the country of the Arabeans extends; they are the last Indians settled in this direction; from here on the territory, of the Oreitans begins. The Manora Island also was visited by Ottoman admiral Seydi Ali Reis and mentioned in his book Mir'ât ül Memâlik in 1554. According to the British historian Eliot, parts of city of Karachi and the island of Manora constituted the city of Debal. The island was the site of a small fort constructed in the eighteenth century when the port of Karachi traded with Oman and Bahrain. The fort was stormed by the British in 1839 because of the strategic location of Karachi. The lighthouse is a visible reminder of the British presence having been built in 1889 to assist vessels approaching Karachi harbor. me and my siblings used to go to Manora almost every weekend as my aunty who was a teacher at KPT girls school. i remember that we used to watch steamers and other boats and tugs from my aunty's dining Room window. Loved the breakfast prepared by my nani which include local DUCK eggs and local GOAT's milk. spend early mornings and sunset by walking around the beach. Remember the huge idols on the enterancegate leading to the sea, near the KPT girls school.The fish was delicious sold be the local people. Remember the big boats SURKHAB and SEEKHPAR. Used to catch fish from CHOTA SAMANDAR in our aunt's dopatta, tiny little fish ( feell sorry now for killing innocent animals_____vegetarian ) and bigger siblings helped us to fry and eat them.it was so safe and harmonious place in the 60's and 70's. now 2 years ago i visited the island after 32 years and found it a deserted place. Most of the people have moved out . One thing i noticed and was very impressed -- the beach was very clean andno plastic bag, bottle,can or any other rubbish was there. Hawksbay and sand's pit were dirty.Also it was sad to see the beautiful hindu temple, which still has some lovely tiles , crumbling away from the cruel sea waves and there is no one to restore it. would love to visit Manora Island again.

Syed hello, Robert here, passing through. I just looked at the Google pics and I see that my old house is still there (Bungalow 2B). Such memories. I'm sure you're right when you say I would be disappointed, but I'll always have the memories of youth. I used to love riding up to the lighthouse on my Hercules bike, spend time with the signalman, descend the steep steps down to the beach, explore the caves and rocks. Family days out with friends from school (KGS) were great fun, too. I must say, though, that I was happiest on my own, riding about, buying snacks from Mr. Lal Khan's shop, meeting up with local boys for a bit of cricket practice, etc. See if you can find "The Buick" by RJMaughan. I wrote it in nostalgic mood years ago online. It defines my time on Manora. Regards Arjay.

I lived on Manora Island '48 - '55. My mother ran the Kindergarten for K.P.T. Most of the kids were children of the Pilots then stationed on the Island. I lived at Bungalow 2B. The island was a wonderful playground for an adventurous boy. I used to ride my bike all over, but mostly I loved riding up the hill to the lighthouse then to the clifftops where I could watch ships take on the pilots and follow them round the breakwater into the channel. I remember you, Stephanie! I was eight in '51, too. It was great fun introducing you (and your brother?) to the delights of my home. I was very sad to leave for boarding school in England, and sadly, never managed to go back. I'm retired now and thinking about making the trip, but I understand it has all changed. It would break my heart to find it has been spoiled. Anybody care to comment on the difference then and now. Regards all. Arjay.

Memories of Manora are carved deeply in my heart as I spent my childhood days here. How can I forget waking up in the morning with the sounds of sea gulls and waves crashing on the shore. I used to spent my entire afternoons in the lazy and idyllic beach surroundings, playing with sea shells, taking long walks on the beach and finllay watching the sun set in the evening. Ah those were the days my friend we thought would never end..............

i love Manora island. went for a visit in 2008 and found it very depressing and deserted but the beach was the cleanest amongs all the other karachi beaches with no plastic bags or empty cans .the fish tasted the same as 40 years ago.the Temple is crumbling down.and the giant 3 MURTIS near the girls school have GONE and i felt sad that we are not saving our past.people are still loving.

I have visited again Manora on 17th of April 2010 with my mother to recall memories and to say fatiha to my father and grand father's grave, you can not belive manora is empty now very less population, most of the people left the place building are empty i went to see my house but it was totaly broken, i was sad but......................................... I LOVE MANORA memories still there my child hood, my friends,my School, the Mosque where i go to perform Namaz, where i started reading Quran, my teachers................................................................................and ......................................... I have lovely memories of Manora Island because i was brought up in nearby Keamari. I used to frequent this historical Island with friends for picnics and enjoyable boatrides. I still go there with my grown up kids whenever i get the time. Oh yes i have the previlege of scaling the historical Lighthouse when in my younger days & believe me the view from up there is simply breathtaking! I love Manora despite the fact that it has become quiet populated now.

wow, do we need to go to hawaii, I was born in england, surrey, but my parents brought me to karachi when i was only 6, since then i grew up by the sea,hawkesbaay and now clifton. we must do some thing to save our beaches. I do not know what exactly it is, all the news about manora island and other island for sale. all i know that karachi once was a beautiful city and now is a mess. please save the city,which was once named as glory of east by sir napier. what do we need, what exactly our plans our for this megapolis and its million of habitants. will any one ever take it seriously..... where are we going...... I ENJOYED COMMING ACROSS THIS SITE. I SPENTABOUT 2 TO 3 WEEKS IN MANORA IN 1951 AS A CHILD OF 8. WE WERE WAITING FOR PASSAGE TO ENGLAD AFTER MY FATHER STOPPED FLYING FOR ORIENT AIRWAYS AND TOOK A JOB BACK WITH AER LINGUS...WE STAYED WITH A FRIEND AND HER FAMILY WHO RAN THE ISLAND CLINIC. SHE WAS THE NURSE.. I REMEMBER IT AS A MOST IDYLLIC PLACE WHERE WE ROAMED THE BEACHES FOR HOURS UNSUPERVISED AND RODE A CAMEL ON THE BEACH. BACK THEN THE BEACHES WERE DESERTED.. I WAS SORRY TO HEAR OF THE IMPENDING DEVELOPMENT BY A DUBAI COMPANY.. IT IS A PLACE THAT WILL ALWAYS HAVE MAGICAL MEMORIES FOR ME.. STEPHANIE
