I didn't see the uncropped version, but this one is wonderful - aside from all that has been said, I love the way his shirt matches the color he is running into and how he echos the runners on the wall.

A very eye-catching image Shirley...Phil's advice was great as usual ;-)K

I just realized that the runner is actually a soccer player. He is chasing a ball, which I did not notice in the uncropped version. It gives him a reason for his run!

You are welcome, Shirley. I love how this image works for you now. It is incongruous, with the symbolic athletes racing a real runner. And it is still just as rich in color contrast. Your FZ30, which has eight megapixels to play with, allows you to crop drastically like this and still have a good quality image of at least four to five megapixels.

(Am off on a shoot in Utah National Parks and Yellowstone tomorrow with pbase photographer Tim May. Back in October. More later. Tim and I are looking forward to meeting you when we come to Beijing a year from now.)

Thanks, Phil, for the good suggestion!

You can take this image in two different directions just by cropping or not cropping it, Shirley. As it stands, it offers scale incongruity and a range of color in those empty bleachers, but that's it -- a study in form. However, if you cropped the image as a long horizontal along the top of the stone bricks on that wall, and cropped that red figure on the right hand edge of the image out, you would be left with a striking image of speed -- a running man, incongruously chased by a running purple figure at left and chasing a running blue figure at right. Half the image of meaningless green windows on a brown facade would be gone. And the new cropped image, because it becomes a long horizontal, would seem to be moving in itself.
