What a great set of pictures! I'm 64, and left Edinburgh in 1965, but often think of "Porty". Fishing off the prom, with a bottle of liquorice water and a bag of sandwiches for lunch; swimming in the fantastic 1930's outdoor pool (now sadly gone - but can still be seen by Googling "Portobello Swimming Pool") in the rain with friends - sometimes the only occupants; the indoor (saltwater) baths with the hot rolls and Bovril - as mentioned by Colin Cornwall - if a daytime swim, or a pint of lager afterwards in the Hammy Lodge (if an evening swim). Must stop - I'm getting a lump in my throat! Keep the images coming!

I fondly remember Mrs. Webber and her sweetie shop -- I even remember the layout (candy floss machine in top right corner and counter on left side). I think I caused the shelf to be bent downward by leaning down on it to boost up to see the treats. Her son also had a small white hut on the Promenade around the corner that sold ice-cream. Lived in 1 straiton place during early to mid 70's. Went to Tower Bank -- yech!! and then to Parson's Green. Anybody take a trip to the power station?

Was reading the comments and must agree with Mary Riddock on the Candy Floss and Colin Cornwall about Demarcos and the Baths cafe. Those were the days. I have lived in New Zealand now for over 30 yrs but think of those places often, what about Springs the Butchers they made the best Haggis ever? Great photos of my childhood many thanks.

Hi I'm 50 yrs young most of which I've spent here in Porty and I Love it still, thanks for all the lovely images, what a great web site. I've lived in East Brighton Cres, Lee Cres. Brighton Place and I'm moving to Bellfield Street in a couple of months having just bought a house there (same St as the Baths). Who remembers Peas & Vinegar on a saucer at Demarcos Cafe, or the toasted rolls with butter and a mug of Bovril after a swim at Porty baths served upstairs in the cafe?

Many happy summer holidays I spent in Porty. I recall spending most of my days sailing on the Skylark. The boatman (Eddie) always let me and my sister and brother on free. Spent all our money in the most wonderful shop ever called Erinalls. Mrs Webber, who owned the sweetie shop on Bath street always made sure we had free sweets and allowed us to run our fingers round the candyfloss machine so we could get a little treat. I just adored Mrs Webber. Salt of the earth. Morris in the amusements. always angry when kids went near. of course, that made it all the more fun. Yes, I found this site tonight, and it has taken me back nearly forty years. What a joy it's been, Thank's for the nostalgic visit

I've been in Porty for the 1st time in February this year. My boyfriend is from Porty and he showed me around. I think it's al lovely place and I enjoyed that week. It's nice to back in Holland and have a wee swatch at all the places we've been. Beautifull pictures!!!

Have just had time to look at the Porty Gallery - really great. We have spent many, many weeks holiday in Porty with Brother-in-Law and also at Mum-in-Law's in Morningside and before that in North Berwick. Love the whole area and now we live in France, it will be really good to visit the East Edinburgh area from time to time. Keep up the good work. CH

I used to take my Gran a walk along the prom at Portobello when I went to see her. Always stopped at a caf� in Joppa (I think!) for tea and a bun. I wonder if the salt water swimming pool is still there.
