This was the first Abraham Lincoln statue outside the USA, and is the only American Civil War memorial outside the USA. For more info see http://www.americancivilwar.org.uk/articles/edinburgh_memorial.htm. This poem was to have been recited when the monument was unveiled in 1893:
"Another clasp of loving hands,
Another link across the sea,
A living word from distant lands
To grace the soldiers of the free;
Columbia, at her Mother's knee,
Unfolds the scroll of Liberty.
Through prismed tears let sunlight play,
Secure in joy, redeemed in grief,
One song unites the Blue and Gray,
One glory binds the garnered sheaf
War's cruel reaping kindly sealed
By brothers of the martyred field"
BTW, this is my third attempt at getting this for a PAD! :) And it was well chucking it down with rain - got the nice new camera all wet...
And a double (just!) rainbow, and some autumn colours. Lots more in the maybes today - other shots of the memorial, and the sunset & rainbow down at Portobello Beach.
