I enjoyed a trip through your galleries Lee. I live in Dunedin New Zealand (the Edingburgh of the South) We have a small settlement on the Otago Peninsula named after Portobello in Scotland. The suburb I live in is called Roslyn. Not sure why the second S was dropped. Cheers John

Hey Lee

I grew up living on Esplanade Terrace, my family still lives there. I've now moved to Oz and haven't been home in ages. Every time I feel a bit far away I look at your photos. They're absolutely great! I feel warm and happy looking through your shots, especially the Joppa and Porty ones. Your shots are technically fantasic, but, foremost for me, your pictures really cure my homesickness. They're barry pal/bloody awesome mate ;)

One of the best photo collections here.

You have great stuff here and I'm a little jealous to be honest.

Great gallery, well done!

Hi Lee; I was a child of 8 when my family moved to Portobello (Durham Road) and I left there in 1962 to move to Central Edinburgh. Your photographs, which are excellent, reminded me of the detail of what was always a very big mixture of the beauty of order and the beauty of chaos. Many thanks. Tom
Stuart Bell 28-Aug-2006 20:28
Are you taking your pics in B&W or do you do that in the post-process? Cheers.

Kelly Tyler 15-Jun-2006 18:48
Lee, it's me again. I was just wondering if you had any photos of Pipe Street in Portobello. My maternal grandmother, who I never met because she died in Canada when my mother was only 12 years old, lived at 35 Pipe Street. I would so dearly love to see a picture of that street. Do you have any in your repertoire, by chance? Again, your photography is phenomenal.
Kelly Tyler 15-Jun-2006 18:39
Lee: Your photographs are some of the most amazing I have ever seen in my life, if not the most amazing. I absolutely fell in love with Portobello when I saw the pictures that you took of the beach the night of the snow storm in February, 2005, and the day after. My gut reaction was, "Oh, I want to move there!" I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; and I am planning a trip to Scotland maybe as soon as September of this year. Thank you so much for giving me so many hours of viewing pleasure. Your gift is truly God-given.
Ian Hartley 03-Jun-2006 17:53
Hi Lee. Thanks very much. My colleges and I at work have done very little work today as we spent most of the afternoon looking at your pictures. Its excellent. You have a talent. I live in Portobello myself so especially enjoyed the beach scenes etc.
Hope you dont mind but I have 'romantic evening walk' as my desk top picture. cheers.

Hah! I just read Wendy's comment and indeed Portobello is a great place (as captured in Lee's photos) and hence, why I am moving back there. For anyone who hasn't visited Portobello and East lothian - it is one heck of a beautiful place and well worth a visit.
Wendy 02-Dec-2005 23:54
Really impressed by your photos - found your wider selection of images through the Portobello website , as I live there. Edinburgh looks stunning through your eyes - well done - if I didn't already live here, I'd be tempted to make the move !

I think your work is absolutely fantastic, im currently studying BA HONS Spatial Design at Falmouth college of Arts, my current project is all about water movement, found your photos of the tides perfectly captured what I wanted to express about the tide. Hope you don't mind me using them in my research.

Hi Lee,
Your galleries are really good and attractive. Very impressive. I have been to Scotland but I think I had missed so many good shots after looking at your wonderful galleries.
Peter Stubbs 02-Oct-2005 21:24
Hi Lee:

1. That's a great collection of images that you are creating and sharing with us. I believe that the collection will become even more valuable and interesting as time passes and the scene changes. Keep up the good work!

2. I responded to a question today in my www.edinphoto.org.uk guest book by referring the questioner to one of the photos on your site.

Best wishes: Peter Stubbs, Edinburgh

Seems like a more than appropriate time to wish you both all the best and say thanks for the wonderful pictures of Edinburgh, which show that my old home city isn't quite the dreary still-living-in-the-19th-century themepark I'd sometimes imagined. Of course the very high technical/artistic level of the shots helps, but mainly it's lovely to see things great and small through somebody else's more positive vision.
Gma Jean and Moira 08-Sep-2005 19:32
Great photos Lee , Hope you bring back plenty photos from you and Jenny's honeymoon . By the way who are you trusting to take the wedding photos on Sat???
Kath 02-Sep-2005 08:56
Beautiful photos, thanks. I'm going to Portobello to visit my boyfriend's family for the first time in October - I hope it lives up to your images.
cliffwright 01-Aug-2005 20:52
You've some fantastic shots here! You Certainly are a luck fella with a walk to work like that every day! ;)

Keep up the good work!

Lee, I originally stumbled onto your gallery a while ago since we seem to share a liking for Panasonic FZ cameras, but of course it became even more interesting when I found that you have such an extensive collection of shots of my home town. The galleries are great to re-visit since you seem to keep adding a steady flow of new additions. You've covered so many areas of the city so well, and it's all very nostalgic for those like myself who now find themselves far away. On behalf of us all, many thanks for posting your portfolio, in addition to being terrific shots, they're a vivid reminder of the city and our various memories of it.
Great stuff - I'm assuming you also indulge in some post processing - so I don't know how you find time for the day job.

Lee, I found your gallery when searching for a reference to the Greenside Church architectural conversion, purpose being to caption half a dozen of my shots for Alamy. I am bound to comment that if all your pictures had been on 6 megapixel and interpolated from raw to 48+ megabyte files, you would have had a superb collection for Alamy and could be earning several thousand a year from just the Edinburgh shots. I shouldn't say this (why encourage competition?!). Our daughter is moving to Edinburgh soon, but has handed back her Canon 300D provided for library shots as she reckons the outfit is too big to bother carrying round, so we're getting her an Ixus 700 to keep feeding those 'found' pictures into the system. I only shoot occasional pix in Edinburgh when shopping and don't even carry a camera when coming in to play a little music with friends at Sandy Bells! I have really enjoyed browsing through you shots and it's reminded me what I miss by not exploring the city more. David, Kelso.

Lee, I had loads of fun looking at your photos of our wonderful city. And as I'm a Porti girl, it was great to see the Portobello/Joppa shots. Especially liked your shot "pink floaters" (the name made me laugh). Keep it up you obviously have talent.

Peace out

Hi Lee, great pictures. Anytime I think I need a DSLR, I look at your FZ20 photos and realise it is the photographer and not the camera that makes the difference.

All the best from David in Fife aka MacCamMan on Panasonic Talk Forum.

Hi Lee
Great shots....clear and sharp. Love them all!

Hi Lee, great pictures! I wanted to ask how you are able to supress the original photo when viewing? I have webspace on pbase.com too and I was wanting to know how to only allow small and medium sizes?

Thanks,

Stuart

Lee you’re an inspiration! Not only your are photos great, but you make the effort to caption them, which for me, further enhances the viewing experience. As a new owner of a FZ20 I keep popping back here for reassurance, to confirm I’ve made the right camera choice. Ps I would also like to know the same things as “edith and joost”. All the best JonS.

Hello Lee, your foto galleries are great! Just seen them and 'really admire the sharpness of your shots. That made me curious to ask, especially the macro shots, may I know if you are using another lens with it or just the lens of the lumix DMC-FZ20 alone when you bought it. Because the sharpness is very impressive, I would also like to ask if you do make some editing on it or so? Or is it depends on the lens distance, I really have no idea.. :o) I would appreciate your reply to my mail address edith_joost@yahoo.com. Thank you very much and good luck for making more great foto shots and arts. Best regards-edith and joost :o)

one of the best fz40 gallerys iv seen. you have a great eye for photography.
Michele Rodgers 31-Jan-2005 04:29
Yes I did get your mesage about using the "P" mode. I was asking because I find I shoot mostly in "P" mode with the Canon S1. Otherwise I usually get overexposed pictures. A friend of mine would really like to buy my S1 so I am tossing around the idea of upgrading to the FZ20. I am totally impressed with your photos ... and the 12X zoom looks great. Glad to hear the OIS system works.

I think Scotland and Nova Scotia have quite the same winters ... we may get more snow but I will be happy when the spring comes and there are more daylight hours.

Again ... thanks for the help.

Michele

I have been looking at the Fz20 and the photos seem great. I was wondering how you like it. Is the 12X zoom working ok ... I was hoping the anti shake works well.

If you have a minute could you please let me know on my site.

Thanks, Michele

Delighted with your pictures of India, especially Kovalam, where I was awakened one morning, after a late night arrival, by the sounds of chanting, and stepped out on my porch to see the Kovalam beach you pictured. A boat was there, with fishermen pulling in nets as they chanted. What a joy to finally have a photo of it. I had found your site in searching for news of tsunami effects on the small temple islands off Cape Cormoran. My camera had been worked to death in Tibet & Nepal before getting down to India in 1999, where I took no pics. The wonders of Kerala left me weeping for a new camera. Thank you so much for the pictures. I weep no more! (And for the photos of Edinburgh - where my father was born in 1871!) My great grandmother is buried in North Berwick. My great aunt ran a hotel in Glasgow. Your site, beginning to end, seemed tailored for me. Thank you! dzeidi
Michele Rodgers 20-Jan-2005 06:19
Great photos ... you seem to get the best out of the camera. Could you please tell me if you shoot in the "auto" mode much. I am interested in this camera and am wondering how well the "auto" mode works.

Thanks,

Michele

Just been having a look at your galleries. Some cracking shots - like you I'm a cloudaholic.

Some particularly atmospheric railway shots, also I'm surprised I haven't bumped into you at Warriston Cemetery or the botanic garden.

Great work

Your photos of the new parliament are excellent. I took loads recently but many of yours are more intimate. Edinburgh is such a photogenic city with all these vantage points and startling perspectives.
