Brown Pelican

San Leandro Channel, Bay Farm Island, Alameda, CA

A juvenile, plunging for a catch. Immatures have a successful catch rate of about 50-60% while adults have a rate of up to 85%. This is the diving flight posture just prior to streamlining the wings behind and in line with the body for the final strike.
