Our friend, 18-year-old Rachel Dorothy Dowling of Philadelphia, PA (right, in red jacket and purple shorts), ran her first officially-timed marathon successfully in Pocatello. She came in at a little less than 4 hours (see Pocatello Marathon Web site for exact timing), finishing first in her category (girls 15-19), 11th among all women, and 61st overall in a field of about 200 men and women who entered in the full marathon. She just graduated from Penn Charter School and will be a freshman at Stanford this Fall. She has been a brilliant writer since her previous (first) visit to Pocatello when she was 12, and may double-major in chemistry and philosophy. Her Dad, Dr. William ("Will") Dowling, was my office mate when he and I taught computer science at Drexel University in Philadelphia starting in 1984. Will ran the 10K here during the same event and finished 2nd in his category.
