Normally spelled without the hyphen between the "al" and the "hambra." But spelling it my way brings out the strange fact that the Spaniards had put an article upon an article! The piece's title, I think, means "Souvenirs from the the Red." But of course, l'Alhambra is a famous structure in Spain, an excellent example of Muslim architecture with a Christian modification to it.
Anyway, the piece is a well-known masterpiece, and Sheeley executed it very smoothly and comfortably. No wonder Tom Sheeley won the first prize in the first Manuel Ponce International Competition. He teaches at Northern Arizona University. Among his students was my guitar teacher, Bill O'Brien of ISU. Sheeley performed to a full house at Jensen Hall tonight.
