The British and the French both claimed Crown Point in their quests to control North America. The British attempted to oust the French 4 times between 1755 and 1758. Finally, in 1759 they French abandoned then Fort St. Frederic and the British took over. The British then began building their own Fort of Crown Point. The fort was a key location in the British plan to conquer Canada, the last French stronghold, and control of Lake Champlain.
