The legend goes that Brahma held two halves of an eggshell in his hands over which he read sacred hymns. Sixteen elephants emerged. The eight guardian deities who preside over the eight points of the compass were given an elephant each so that they could use them for the defense and protection of their part of the world. Erawan was king of those elephants.
