I-70 passes through Glenwood Canyon, and surprisingly, is remarkably scenic. The 16 mile-long canyon is on the Colorado River. Transportation, environmental, recreational and economic considerations were all taken into account before the highway opened in 1992. The freeway snakes through the canyon using bridges, tunnels, and retaining walls to create a highway that has made the canyon very accessible to the public.
