July 13: Cross comb

We've been through the bee hive today. The bees had been building comb between the frames, joining them together. While we're happy for them to do what they think is best, something had to be done here before things got sticky, i.e. full of honey! So, we went right through the hive and removed the cross comb. They, the bees, were clearly a bit miffed that someone was moving their walls and furniture around, but they didn't get so upset that they tried to sting anyone. Here's a beautiful piece of comb we had to remove. It smells good too! Oh, and we saw the queen... for the first time since we've had them! She's laying well, but there doesn't seem to be much stored honey so we've put the feeder back on. We don't want them starving to death due to the bad weather we're having.

This is so beautiful. What a shame to have to remove their hard work... oh well, it had to be done.
