One of the beauty of using photoshop as a tool is that I can use the Levels tool.
The levels tool controls the highlight or contrast.
The way it works for me is that I can either take away or add light to a photo.
Notice the level box left of the helmet?
I will move the level of brightness to the left. This will take away the dark parts
